Writing
We aim for all our children to become enthusiastic and competent writers. Children will gain a love of language, grammar, storytelling and fact telling to become the most successful and equipped writers; developing a love of writing.
Using reading as the foundation for all our writing provides children with the opportunity to hear, see and read high quality texts from a variety of genres which will inspire, stimulate and engage their imagination. Writing teaching and learning will enhance their transcription and composition skills in order to develop their competence in these two essential dimensions. Children will see writing as an interesting and enjoyable process and take ownership of their writing by seeing themselves as real writers, writing for a purpose. Children will confidently write in all areas of the curriculum, considering their purpose and audience, in order to excite and enthuse the reader.
Children will leave our school with a wealth of writing skills and knowledge in order to be successful global citizens, understanding how using writing will contribute to their everyday lives and their impact on the wider community.
Spelling & Handwriting:
We are committed to building strong foundations in handwriting and spelling to support all children in becoming confident, fluent writers. Our intent is to ensure that pupils develop clear, legible handwriting and secure spelling knowledge through a structured and consistent approach across the school.
We teach handwriting and spelling alongside the Read Write Inc. phonics programme, ensuring that both are embedded within daily practice from the earliest stages of learning. Through Read Write Inc., children are systematically taught letter formation, pencil grip, and posture as they learn to write each sound, enabling them to develop accuracy and fluency in their handwriting. Spelling is taught explicitly through phonics, enabling pupils to understand sound-letter correspondences, spelling rules, and common exceptions.
By integrating handwriting and spelling into our phonics teaching, we help to reduce cognitive load, helping children to develop automatic transcription skills. This strong foundation allows them to focus more effectively on the higher-level skills of writing—such as grammar, structure, and creativity—as they move through the curriculum.
