Hawthorn Class

Welcome to Hawthorn Class!

 

Mr Becker teaches Hawthorn class. He is supported by Mrs Kettleborough.

 

PE days are Monday and Thursday. We visit the library on a Wednesday afternoon.

 

 

For our first two topics of the year, we have been studying The Vikings and The Ancient Greeks. For these topics we have produced some stunning art work. 

 

Firstly, we produced Norse patterns and symbols using clay. We had to design, shape, coil, join (with slip) and paint our designs to reflect elements of Viking culture with our own additions to personalise them; making them special for us. 

 

More recently we have produced fantastic 'masks' inspired by those worn in Ancient Greek theater. These masks were used to show emotions to audiences who would often be too far away to notice facial expressions used by the actors. We made these using cardboard as a base, layered and scrunched newspaper to create different facial features and then covered this with modroc (much like plaster bandage). We had to wet and smooth the modrock to create a porcelain type effect. We then painted these to add impact to their appearance!

Year 5 have been reading the book The last Wild by Piers Torday. The children have been really enjoying the book which is about a little boy who is able to talk to animals after the spread of a deadly disease called ‘the red eye’.

We have been memorising the beginning of the story through creating a text map, including images and actions.

Hawthorn class have really been enjoying reading our new class book. ‘The king of shadows’ is about a little boy who catches the plague, 400 years after the disease first broke out. The children have been inferring character thoughts and feelings in order to hot seat each other. These discussions have then allowed the children to write direct speech and reported speech.

This week in Hawthorn class we have been working together and sharing ideas. We have worked together to write in different forms, adjusting the writing depending on how formal it needs to be.
